There are 9 million teachers in India teaching 260 million children in 1 million schools. Teachers continue to use age-old conceptual and pedagogical knowledge sharing methods in classrooms and focus majorly on course curriculum completion. Almost 90% of teachers are not trained and, do not have skills to search for new content to keep classrooms relevant and interesting and are unaware of concepts such as Life Skills, Sustainable Development Goals, Gender Sensitivity, and Digital Literacy which are becoming increasingly important now. Most teacher capacity building approaches today are offline with significant challenges including availability of quality trainers, infrastructure, logistics, and absence from school. States have teacher trainings programs but cannot provide continuous professional development to teachers at the scale, quality, convenience or frequency required. There is no teacher community for government school teachers to discuss classroom challenges. This results in low teacher preparedness, relevance and motivation, and consequently student learning outcomes are poor and they end up ill-prepared to get admitted into colleges and deal with academic and life challenges. We believe that focusing on teachers continuous professional development at large scale using technology is required.
We offer “ChalkLit”, a mobile platform to state education departments, and school bodies to run online capacity building programs for the continuous professional development of teachers and school administrators. The platform includes both academic and extra-academic classroom transaction focused lesson plans, content, and training modules structured in bite-sized formats suitable for just in time consumption on smartphones and developed in partnership with experienced teachers and practitioners using content curated from over 4000+ quality sources.
The platform also allows other NGOs, content, and implementation partners in the education space to put their content, training, and other programs on ChalkLit allowing them to conduct these effectively at scale and offer online and blended programs to teachers and school leaders across partner states.
ChalkLit also enables a thriving community of teachers through its personalized social peer-to-peer microlearning wall that enables teachers to interact with each other and mentors.
We currently partner with 6 states, many curriculum bodies and NGO partners representing 1.5M teachers and 100M children. In 2 years, we have successfully trained more than 100000 teachers spread over 25500 schools and impacted about 7million students through them. We are aiming towards a systematic change by enabling training of hundreds of thousands of teachers making their classroom teaching more effective and relevant by organizing experienced teachers to identify key challenges and solutions for transacting individual topics across subjects and grades. This continuous professional development of teachers at this scale, quality, convenience and frequency is resulting in improved teacher motivation and preparedness which is highly correlated to the student learning outcomes.
We see an average training completion rate of 85%. 95% teachers report finding useful and executable classroom strategies on ChalkLit. An independent research by Delhi SCERT concluded that using ChalkLit, teachers are 30% more likely to address misconceptions in students and 22% more likely to contextualize learning with real life examples, clear evidence that the approach has been effective.
